Do you belong to LinkedIn? If yes – great! If not, you should look into signing-up. Because here’s an easy way to get traffic from it. I got an early pre-release copy a couple of days ago and have found it to be very illuminating. If we analyze the basic concept of the major social networks, we’d have to say Facebook = Friends (now Facebook is also good for business though) Twitter = Buzz and LinkedIn = Business

We received a lot of questions yesterday from people asking us how they could find relevant groups to post to on Linkedin. I thought this might be of interest to you too.

We have found that the best way to find relevant groups on Linkedin is to use these 3 simple steps I’m about to reveal to you.

So for instance let’s say my site is about “beauty products” (anti-aging, skincare, cosmetics etc.), a classic niche.

1. THE BRAINSTORMING SESSION
———————————————-
I usually start by brainstorming the keywords I am targeting for my original website.

In my case these will be: “skin care” “beauty treatments” etc.

You can always use the Google Keyword tool to find related keywords.

2. THE SECRET SEARCH STRING
—————————————————
Once you get a list of 5-10 of those enter this search string in Google:
site:linkedin.com “YOUR KEYWORD HERE” inurl:groups

This will show you all the groups from linkedin with your keyword inside.
Now you can have a look at the results and see if you find groups that fits directly into your keywords.
site:linkedin.com “skin care” inurl:groups

I try this search string in Google but I don’t like the results I get. Onto the next step.

3. THE LOOPHOLE TWIST

If you cant find any related groups don’t despair. Linkedin is a professional network, and once you understand this concept you will see hundreds of niches appear right in front of your eyes.

Simply follow this process:

-stop thinking about people in terms of interests
-start thinking about people in terms of PROFESSIONAL OCCUPATION

Example 1: Watching movies online is an interest. But which PROFESSION is likely to watch movies online??? I’d say students.

Now you can go ahead and use the Google search strings above to find plenty of students groups you can promote your movie streaming website to.

Always think about what type of professional people might benefit from the product you are targeting. Please note: the emphasis on benefit is intentional: you need to add a lot of value to make money online.

Now that I have made this reflection, I realize I could probably target beauty professionals groups (hairdressers, cosmetic experts).

In fact in Linkedin groups you get two types of crowds:
1. Professionals who are working in companies
2. Newbies who are studying/still learning and want to become professionals
And both crowds, especially the newbies spend money in their industry as consumers since they have a passion for it.

So you can use the search string below and replace “job/industry title” with the socio-professional categories which you found.

Using this search string for my site I found this group with 32,000 members

http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=129847

If I can find one group with 32,000 members this means that there will be tons of people I can target on other groups!

To wrap up, we just wanted to make it clear that when using Linkedin to do some marketing you should always think in terms of job/industries rather than interests. Very few people grasp this, and I hope you will be one of those people, because when you do you will realize how much open opportunities there are for you by simply using the Linkedin Traffic Loophole.
