Google AdWords Click Through Rates by Position

December 4th, 2009 Roger 1 comment

Interesting report shows different Click Through Rates by ad position on the Google page. The #1 position in Google AdWords typically gets over 8 times the number of clicks of the #5 position ad.

Average click through rates for Google AdWords ads for each position from 1 (top of first page) to 20 (bottom of second page right-hand column) are listed in the table below:

Position CTR
1 7.94%
2 5.00%
3 2.47%
4 1.96%
5 0.90%
6 0.81%
7 0.91%
8 0.74%
9 0.75%
10 0.20%
11 0.78%
12 0.51%
13 0.83%
14 0.37%
15 0.54%
16 0.48%
17 0.25%
18 0.06%
19 0.60%
20 0.71%

The takeaway here is that once you start to get an ad that is profitable, you need to experiment moving the position up to get more clicks and bring greater profits.

For example, the number 4 ad position gets twice as many clicks as the number 5 position ad. Yet to get from number 5 to number 4 will not be very difficult, using techniques available on this AdWords Secrets blog and in our free and paid publications.

3 Easy Ways to Top Google Organic Search

December 2nd, 2009 Roger No comments

Mostly, I use paid PPC (AdWords) to get my Google results. But lately, I’ve been realizing that even if you have millions of dollars at your disposal for PPC (I wish!)… eventually you WILL run out of cash flow… if you rely on paid search alone.

So here are 3 quick, proven and cheap ways to get to the top of the left-side of the Google search page… where traffic is FREE.

1. USE VIDEO and SPREAD it AROUND

so1 3 Easy Ways to Top Google Organic Search

I love video. It is much easier than writing… and here are some examples of where I got to the top of Google in the PDF security market (in this market I have the top 4 spots out of over 4.5 Million results);

The search term example here is How to Protect Your PDF from Copying

2. USE SURVEYS embedded in your BLOGS

so2 3 Easy Ways to Top Google Organic Search

Google LOVES surveys and quizzes. Especially when they are on a blog. Here is an example where I use a SurveyGizmo survey I created to drive traffic toward my money page. Again, this is for the PDF security market (there is a lot of money in that market, by the way);

The search term example here is protect my pdf and here I have 2x top-10 spots, out of over 24 Million results

3. USE DOWNLOAD.com to GET FREE TRAFFIC and RANKINGS

so3 3 Easy Ways to Top Google Organic Search

Through one simple software application I had made for me for $150 on scriptlance.com, I get nearly the whole first page of Google for the keyphrase; keyword commercial intent

All I had to do is upload the software to upload.com (sister site of download.com) and the rest was automatic. Got me most of the first page of Google for over 380,000 competing results.

4. BONUS TIP
