According to LinkedIn.com, a small cupcake company in the USA ran a 75% off coupon and received orders for 250,000 cupcakes. The store had to staff up to deal with the increased volume – a cost they had failed to calculate into the campaign. The final impact was a loss of $20,000. That’s a big hit! Will they get repeat business? Certainly (some). Will they get enough to make up for the $20,000 losses? Maybe – in the long run. But overall it was a costly (and risky) experiment. Unfortunately, this story is being repeated countless times all over the world.
